Plains zebras have shiny coats that dissipate over 70% of incoming heat, and some scientists believe the stripes help the animals withstand intense solar radiation. The black and white stripes also act as camouflage called disruptive coloration that breaks up the outline of the body.

Support Grevy’s Zebra Conservation
Together We Can Save the Grevy's Zebra

A few decades ago, more than 15,000 Grevy’s zebra inhabited Africa. Today, fewer than 2,500 remain. The greatest threats facing this endangered species are habitat fragmentation and loss as more land is converted to agricultural use.

AWF’s Grevy’s Zebra Research Project in our Samburu Heartland is working hard to conserve this species. Dr. Paul Muoria and his team are researching the Grevy’s population status and critical threats so that AWF and its partners can develop effective conservation strategies. The team has made considerable progress in gaining a greater understanding of the Grevy’s population and has involved local communities to become engaged in Grevy’s conservation.

But there is more to be done. With threats like disease facing the Grevy’s zebra, AWF urgently needs your support to ensure the survival of this beautiful animal.

Your gift now will support AWF’s work throughout the African continent and ensure Africa’s wildlife and wild lands endure forever.
