Learn More About Bonobos
Did You Know?
Did you know that the bonobo is our closest living relative? Most people are familiar with Africa’s gorillas and chimpanzees, but few people know about the amazing bonobo – or the fact that this endangered species is threatened by logging, habitat encroachment and an escalating bushmeat trade. The bonobo lives only in the dense lowland forests of the Democratic Republic of Congo, where AWF is one of the few organizations fighting to save the bonobo and its habitat. The Congo may be far from your home, but you can join AWF’s efforts. Take the first step and learn as much as you can about this gentle, mysterious species. Visit the Wildlife Gallery and AWF’s Congo Heartland pages to learn about bonobos and the threats to their survival. With knowledge comes action.
