Although still numerous in western Uganda, the kob is far less common now in other areas of East Africa. It was once found in western Kenya and northern Tanzania but has not been seen there in recent years.

Dr. Helen Gichohi in Milking the Rhino

WASHINGTON, DC--A chronicle of increasing competition for resources between humankind and wildlife, Milking the Rhino is the first major documentary to explore wildlife conservation from the perspective of people who have lived alongside wildlife all their lives. Shot in some of the world’s most magnificent locales, Milking the Rhino offers complex, intimate portraits of the people at the forefront of community-based conservation in Africa.

A featured expert in the film, AWF President Dr. Helen Gichohi talks about the shift in conservation in Africa from a command-and-control to a community-driven model. A prominent Kenyan ecologist, Helen is helping to solidify the movement toward conservation led by Africans for the benefit of Africa’s people.

Along with Dr. Gichohi, Dr. Hector Magome--South Africa’s first black ecologist, a two-time AWF Charlotte Fellow, and now an executive director at South African National Parks--offers his perspective on the changing nature of conservation in Africa.

A one-hour version of Milking the Rhino will air on PBS on Tuesday, April 7, 2009. Dates and times vary from city to city.
