The Thomson's gazelle is exceptionally alert to sounds and movements, and its fine senses of hearing, sight and smell balance its vulnerability on the open plains. |

Did You Know? This is the first time the world’s most watched sporting event is being held on the continent of Africa. A leading conservation organization focused on Africa, AWF salutes World Cup host and conservation leader, South Africa, as well as all the African teams. Did You Know? World Cup Host South Africa has 20 national parks dedicated to conserving South Africa's wild animals, plants and natural environments. AWF is proud to be a partner of South Africa National Parks (SANParks) through its Limpopo Heartland Program. Did You Know? The Kruger National Park in South Africa today has more than 10,000 elephants—in 1920 there were an estimated 120 elephants left in the whole of South Africa. AWF has been a leader in elephant conservation in Africa for five decades. Did You Know? AWF partner and luxury watchmaker Hublot is the official timekeeper of the 2010 World Cup. Find out what Hublot in partnership with AWF Goodwill Ambassador Veronica Varekova is doing to help Africa’s wildlife. Did You Know? The mascot for the 2010 FIFA World Cup is a leopard named Zakumi. While this costume-clad mascot is adding an entertaining touch to the games, meeting a leopard in the wild is serious business. The most secretive and elusive of the large carnivores, the leopard is also the shrewdest. Pound for pound, it is the strongest climber of the large cats and capable of killing prey much larger than itself. Did You Know? Through its Limpopo Heartland Program AWF is contributing to one of the most ambitious cross-border initiatives unfolding in southern Africa: the development of the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park, which will combine South Africa's Kruger National Park, Mozambique's Limpopo Park and Zimbabwe's Gonarezhou National Park to create one of the biggest conservation areas in the world. Please consider donating to one of many AWF programs in the South African region! |
